Selfishness: An Underrated Trait

Let's talk about something that might sound counterintuitive but could actually do wonders for your relationships: being selfish. Now, I know the word "selfish" has a bad reputation, but hear me out. It's all about a different kind of selfishness—one that can actually make your relationships stronger and more fulfilling. By now, you've probably realized that taking care of yourself is crucial in order to be your best self for those you love.

Think about it: how can we give love, care, and attention to our partner, friends, or family if we're running on empty? It's like trying to start a car with no gas (or electricity)—it just won't work. We need to fill ourselves up first so that we have something to give to others. It's not about neglecting our partner's needs, but rather understanding that true love and care begin with self-love and self-care.

When we prioritize our own well-being, we become the best versions of ourselves for those we love. Just like they say on airplanes: "Put on your own oxygen mask first before assisting others." It's not selfish; it's totally and completely necessary to live a balanced and happy life.

So, what does this "selfishness" actually entail? It's about taking care of yourself in all aspects of life. Let's start with the basics:

Sleep and Nutrition

I know life can get crazy busy, especially with work and other responsibilities, but getting enough sleep and eating healthy are essential for your physical and mental well-being. When you're well-rested and nourished, you'll have more energy and a clearer mind to be present and engaged in your relationship.

Alone Time.

As much as we love spending time with our favorite people, it's important to carve out moments for ourselves. This isn't about shutting them out or neglecting them; it's about giving yourself space to recharge and indulge in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it's reading a book, going for a walk, or simply taking a bubble bath, alone time allows you to reconnect with yourself and maintain a sense of independence.

Practicing self-love is also crucial. Embrace your strengths and imperfections, and be kind to yourself. Celebrate your achievements and learn from your mistakes. Bask in the feeling of being proud of yourself or unpack those feelings of embarrassment. Journaling is great for this. It helps you connect with yourself and intentionally become the person you want to be. A person you are proud to be. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding you would offer to a friend.

When you love and accept yourself, you become a more confident and secure partner in your relationship.

Remember, being selfish isn't about neglecting your loved ones or being insensitive to their needs. It's about finding a healthy balance between your needs and theirs. Communicate openly about your feelings and need to fill yourself up. Healthy relationships are built on mutual understanding and respect, and being honest about your needs will only strengthen your connection.

So, my dear friend, take care of yourself. Prioritize your well-being and happiness, and let go of any guilt about taking time for yourself. Remember that when you fill your own cup, you'll have an abundance of love and care to share with your partner. Embrace self-love and self-care, and watch how it transforms your relationships into something even more beautiful and fulfilling. You've got this, and your relationship will thank you for it!
